Subject of examination

Examination of religious subject matter in a full text, recording or publication, taking genre and sources into account.

  • Complete texts and recordings
  • Concepts, ideas and references
  • Genre, addressee and context

Examination questions

  • Which religious ideas and concepts are presented?
  • What does the disputed passage mean in context?
  • Which information is needed to check the interpretation?

The suggested wording is a starting point. Before agreeing the task, establish which objects are available, which features can be examined and the result format needed. An excessively broad question is better divided into several verifiable tasks.

What to prepare

  • The complete material in its available source form
  • Source, date and translation information
  • Precise questions and related materials

Scope and limitations

A state religious studies examination is a separate procedure. A private examination does not grant its provider the powers of the relevant state council.

Missing materials should be identified in advance. If they are insufficient, this may change the scope, require additional objects or prevent an answer. A disputing party's assumption is not itself a specialist examination result.

Before work begins

The subject, questions, object access, personnel, result format, timing and cost are agreed separately. Before work starts, you receive the agreed question list, cost and timeframe.

How to prepare a text, quotations and translation information

The same expression may form part of a source text, an account of a teaching, a polemic or a critical comment. Preserve this distinction for examination. Alongside a disputed quotation, provide the complete page or recording, publication details, the commentator's identity and the passage's place in the material's overall structure.

If several versions are used

Do not combine different editions in one file without explanation. Identify which version is being examined directly and which are supplied for comparison. A printed text needs title and publication details, page numbers and a readable copy of the relevant spread. An internet publication needs its address, save date and available information about editorial changes.

If the material is translated

  • Supply the source text in its available form alongside the translation.
  • Identify the language and the translation's author or source if known.
  • Identify the terms behind the disagreement, preserving the sentences before and after them.
  • Retain footnotes, explanations and any dictionary on which the publication relies.

This establishes whether disagreement concerns a religious concept, a translation feature or a commentator's position. Checking linguistic accuracy and religious studies interpretation serve different purposes; the available sources should reveal precisely which question has been posed.

Tie the question to the text: which concepts are used in this passage, what function does the quotation serve and which sources support the proposed interpretation? Religious vocabulary alone reveals neither the content of the entire work nor the beliefs of every reader.
