Subject of examination

Consideration of symbols, images and quotations in relation to their use in a particular material.

  • Images and symbolic elements
  • Accompanying texts
  • Sources and circumstances of use

Examination questions

  • Which meanings of the element are supported by context?
  • Are several interpretations possible?
  • Which sources can substantiate the answer?

The suggested wording is a starting point. Before agreeing the task, establish which objects are available, which features can be examined and the result format needed. An excessively broad question is better divided into several verifiable tasks.

What to prepare

  • The image at full resolution and within its complete composition
  • Captions, neighbouring passages and the publication
  • Provenance information and questions

Scope and limitations

An isolated visual motif does not automatically establish a person's religious or organisational affiliation or determine the material's legal status.

Missing materials should be identified in advance. If they are insufficient, this may change the scope, require additional objects or prevent an answer. A disputing party's assumption is not itself a specialist examination result.

Before work begins

The subject, questions, object access, personnel, result format, timing and cost are agreed separately. Before work starts, you receive the agreed question list, cost and timeframe.

Comparing a symbol with its use in a publication

Examining a symbolic element requires two connected descriptions: its visible features and its use in the particular material. A cropped extract may hide the caption, composition or nature of quotation. The complete material and an enlarged detail therefore complement one another.

Data that assist comparison

  • A clear image of the element without redrawn or replaced details.
  • A view of the whole composition and its placement alongside text and other images.
  • The source and known appearance date of the particular publication.
  • Proposed comparison images with their descriptions and provenance.

Comparison considers shape, combinations of elements, inscriptions and function within the composition. Similar-looking motifs may occur in different traditions and be used in decorative, historical, religious or polemical contexts. A proposed meaning must be connected to the particular material supplied rather than merely match a picture found elsewhere.

If the source of a comparison image is unknown, note this separately. A later stylisation, commercial illustration or paraphrase may be unsuitable to support the meaning attributed to it by a party. The collection's date and provenance affect the possibility of checking it.

The final answer should distinguish description of the motif found, supported interpretations of its meaning and the limits of interpretation in the given context. A finding about a publication's content does not automatically establish a depicted person's religious affiliation, intentions or organisational membership. Visual analogies alone are insufficient for those assertions.
